RIP Susan Sexton

Postby dressagewoman » Thu Nov 12, 2009 9:27 am

Acclaimed equine photographer Susan Sexton passed away peacefully in her sleep last night. I consider myself lucky to have known her through the world of equine photography. While I never met her in person, like many of you here, I had a kinship with her through the world wide web. I know most of you aren't equine photographers, but for those who have been doing this dressage thing for a while, especially at higher levels, chances are, you've been the subject of Susan's focus. My deepest condolences to her family.

Another photographer and dear friend of Susan's had this to say about her:

Susan was an exceptional person and equine photographer. She taught and inspired many new and established photographers, both equine and otherwise. Her endless spirit and and wonderful imagery will be terribly missed by her many friends, clients, peers and most of all, her family.

Never met her, but I remember seeing Susan Sexton's name in horse magazines when I was growing up. I'm sure most horse people have heard of her and seen some of her photographs. My condolences to her family.

What a loss, she had so much talent! She used to come stay with us before the IEO show, and her pix were amazing. She knew how to get the best pix!

On my desk here at work I have a lovely picture she took of me and my old Morgan mare in 1982 at the fall NEDA show. I remember her from a lot of shows. She did very nice work.

Oh, no ......
I first met Susan in 1980 when she came to shoot the AHSA dressage finals in Colorado. She was traveling in a trailer with kids ... living in the trailer and also processing film in it. I've treasured her friendship. Was just looking at her gallery on an equine photog site. What a loss ...

She used to live here in Warrenton, VA, but I had never met her.

I do remember her many photographs of sport horses.

Terri ----- That was a lovely tribute to a photographer whose work inspired BEATIFUL riding because the riding would be captured forever, for better or worse. I never spoke w/Susan but I've always admired her. I envy you her friendship. It sounds like it was quite a ride!

Oh, that's so sad. I didn't realize that she had been sick for sometime. I only met Susan once. It was at Dressage at Devon in 2003 when she went out of her way to tell me how much she enjoyed photographing my stallion's head because he had such a great expression. I was so flattered and thought it was so kind of her to tell me that. RIP Susan, :(
